Do Bone Turnover Markers have Clinical Utility?

I am Dr Mithu Banerjee, Professor & Head of Biochemistry at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Jodhpur. On behalf of the Task Force for Outcome studies in Laboratory Medicine of the IFCC it’s my privilege to talk to our guest Dr Sam Vasikaran. He is presently Member of IFCC Committee on "Bone Metabolism". He has chaired the IFCC working group on Bone marker standards. In collaboration with the International Osteoporosis Foundation the working group has recommended reference serum markers for osteoporosis. He is Vice president of the Asia Pacific Federation of Clinical Biochemistry. He is in the board of Directors of Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. We will be discussing the preanalytical issues to be considered, the reference bone turnover markers recommended, utility in judging response to treatment of osteoporosis and the status of bone turnover markers in predicting risk of fractures.
