Climate change is one of the greatest problems currently confronting humanity with threat to the existence or possible extinction of flora and fauna with great implications for eco-health. Although the laboratory medicine community had as part of the scientific community acknowledged the contribution of industrial and scientific activities to climate change it had never fully appreciated the degree and magnitude of the contribution of laboratory medicine practice to climate change , including temperature increase, increased carbon foot print arising from huge energy, water consumption, use of environmentally damaging chemicals and attendant huge waste generation. Laboratory medicine consumes over 5 times the energy consumption of the average regular office. It was only in the last few years, that IFCC, the global leader in education and practice of laboratory, has confronted this growing problem frontally by setting up the TF-EILM. This webinar is conceived to examine the basis of environmental effect of laboratory medicine, the fundamentals, mitigation. Including, the concept of green chemistry. This webinar provides the basis of the environmental impact of laboratory medicine and approaches to mitigation. It will also shed light on the fundamentals of green chemistry and its place in laboratory medicine.
