Dr. Hammarsten is a physician-scientist focused on cardiac biomarkers, with particular expertise in macrotroponin and assay interference in cardiac troponin testing. His work aims to improve the analytical and clinical interpretation of troponin results, including differentiation between true myocardial injury and analytical artifacts. He has also contributed to research on non-necrotic troponin release from viable cardiomyocytes, advancing understanding of troponin biology beyond acute myocardial infarction. He is a Full Member of the ESC Association for Acute Cardiovascular Care Study Group on Biomarkers and a former member of the IFCC Committee on Clinical Applications of Cardiac Biomarkers (C-CB).
